ResumoAmong 224 deoxyribonuclease-positive enterococcal isolates recovered from 208 samples of milk and milk products, only 44 were sensitive to all ten antibiotics (chloramphenicol, erythromycin, kanamycin, novobiocin, neomycin, penicillin, streptomycin, tetracyclin, gentamycin and nitrofurantoin) tested. The remaining isolates exhibited resistance to either one or two, three, four or five antibiotics simultaneously. Eleven antibiotic resistance patterns were observed. Similar patterss were also exhibited by deoxyribonuclease-positive e enterococci isolated from the 24 samples representing sources other than milk and milk products, thereby indicating these as possible sources of contamination in dairy products. The majority of the resistant strains were identified as Streptococcus faecium and Streptococcus faecalis var. liquifaciens.
