Resumo

The reasons for the interest of the Royal Aircraft Establishment in carbon are given and a problem and possible solution in the structure of low density pyrolytic graphite outlined. Work on the thermal accommodation coefficients of some gases on a pyrolytic graphite surface and on nuclear applications is described. The chemistry of the formation of high modulus carbon fibres from polyacrylonitrile fibres is discussed and it is concluded that the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile resembles that of fused ring heterocyclic compounds, the nitrogen incorporated in the ladder polymer formed at about 220°C being slowly evolved as elemental nitrogen above 600°C. It is shown that the present strength of carbon fibres from PAN fibres is limited by macro defects such as voids. Finally activation of the surfaces of carbon fibres by oxidative etching to increase the interlaminar shear strength of carbon fibre resin composites is described.
