The solubilities of MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO in ZnO have been determined over the temperature range of 500–800°C by hydrothermal techniques. The solubilities are 25, 7, 6·5 and 0·9 mole per cent respectively at 800°C. Diffuse reflectance spectra have been obtained for the MnO and FeO crystalline solutions and some of the crystal field parameters have been calculated.
