ResumoWhat is the relationship between improvisation and (drama) education? In this article, Gallagher examines the brief history of improvisation in the drama curriculum and its connection to forms of pedagogy that have prevailed in formal drama classrooms. The “love-hate” relationship many teachers seem to have with classroom improvisation is considered in light of drama's quest for legitimacy in the curriculum and teachers' desires to extend the form and application of this potentially powerful way of creating and learning.
