Resumo

Possible allowed deviations in atomic parity violation from new gauge bosons in extra U(1) models and left-right models are estimated on the basis of the present electroweak data, particularly the latest LEP and CDF limits. The theoretical expectation for the shift in the weak charge is written as the sum of a term proportional to the ϱ-value deviation, a term proportional to the Z−Z' mixing angle, and a term surviving also for zero mixing. For the cesium atom, constraints on MZ and on the Z-Z' mixing result in strong restrictions on the allowed deviations from the standard model prediction. In specific models atomic parity is already capable of putting interesting limitations without any assumption about the Higgs structure (for instance MZ ⩾ 360 GeV in extra U(1) models with θ2=90°). The expected accuracy increase in atomic parity data will allow for more stringent conclusions.
