ResumoThe far-i.r. spectra of β-d-glucose, cellobiose, galactose, lactose, α-d-glucose and saccharose have been studied in the region from 50 to 30 cm−1 at liquid helium temperature. Absorption bands are measured at 40·7 cm−1 in cellobiose, at 47·2 and 41·0 cm−1 in lactose, at 48·5 and 44·4 cm−1 in α-d-glucose and at 45·4 cm−1 in saccharose. The bands at 40·7 cm−1 in cellobiose and at 41·0 cm−1 in lactose can be considered to be due to the inter-ring interactions of cellobiose and lactose, respectively.
