ResumoAbstract Barbaloin can be quantitatively converted into aloe-emodin by heating a solution in 4 N hydrochloric acid, containing 4 per cent ferric chloride, for 4 hr. in a boiling water bath under reflux. Each of these numerical conditions can be varied ±10 per cent without significantly altering the yields. The reaction has been successfully applied to the assay of commercial samples of aloes.
