Assuming that transverse shear stresses can be neglected, various approximations to the yield surface for a thin shell made of material obeying the von Mises yield criterion have been examined. It is found that one proposed by Ilyushin is very close to the exact one in all cases and should prove useful for practical application. A modification to include the effect of transverse shear is suggested.
