ResumoThirteen patients with Gilbert's syndrome have been treated with phenobarbitone. In all instances there was a rapid fall in the plasma-bilirubin, and in three of the ten symptomatic patients the symptoms improved. The reduction in the plasma-bilirubin was associated with, and thought to be the result of, an increase in hepatic bilirubin U.D.P.-glucuronyl transferase activity. Treatment frequently resulted in the plasma-bilirubin falling to normal, a factor which must be taken into account when carrying out surveys of Gilbert's syndrome in the general population.
