Autores ResumoWith this issue, The Journal of Comparative Neurology reaches a landmark that few scholarly journals have achieved: its 500th volume. This accomplishment has required 115 years of continuous publication, since our first issue in December, 1891. Other venerable journals include Science, which has published since 1883 and is at volume 314; Nature, which goes back to 1869 and is at volume 443; and Brain, the oldest English language journal in neuroscience (although it publishes mainly clinical work), which has published since 1878 and is at 129 volumes. Only one other neuroscience journal, Brain Research, has surpassed the landmark of 500 volumes, and it is past volume 1100, having published two volumes per month for most of its 40 years. The longevity of JCN is due primarily to the tenacity of its founding editors, the brothers Clarence Luther Herrick and Charles Judson Herrick, who are pictured on our cover for this issue. The story of their labors was presented in a detailed history of the first 100 years of the Journal by the previous Editor-in-Chief, Sanford L. Palay (1991). Clarence was a Professor at the University of Cincinnati and Charles a student in his department, as they began to turn their attention to studying the brains of “simpler” organisms such as fish and amphibians, to learn about the basic architecture of the vertebrate brain. At the time, there were few scholarly journals in the United States in which to publish such material, and the early volumes of the Journal were dominated by papers from the Herricks and their close associates. Shortly after founding the Journal, Clarence developed tuberculosis, and, by volume 4, Charles had already taken over some of the editing responsibility. He was assisted in this by Oliver Strong at Columbia University and H.H. Donaldson at the University of Chicago. In 1897, Clarence moved to New Mexico, where he became the founding president of the University of New Mexico, and the following year the Journal established its first Editorial Board. In 1904, Clarence succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 46, and the Journal remained in the hands of Charles, who served as Managing Editor until 1927. At that point, his old colleague George Coghill was named Managing Editor and Charles the Chairman of the Editorial Board. But Coghill also suffered from tuberculosis, and once again Herrick found himself editing the Journal. He handed over the title to Davenport Hooker, who became Managing Editor in 1933, but Herrick remained on the Editorial Board and largely continued to manage the Journal's affairs until he was named Editor Emeritus in 1948. Thus, C. Judson Herrick, in one capacity or another, did the bulk of the editorial work on the Journal almost continuously for more than half a century, from shortly after its founding until 1948. In 1949, Gerhardt von Bonin became Managing Editor, and he was succeeded by Donald Barron in 1956. W. Maxwell Cowan became Managing Editor in 1969, and in 1981 Sanford L. Palay, his successor, changed this title to Editor-in-Chief. In 1992, Palay added Associate Editors, and, upon his retirement in 1994, the current Editor-in-Chief continued this policy, giving the title of Managing Editor to the Journal office manager, who does so much of the daily work. The Journal has gradually increased its frequency of publication over the years. From 1891 to 1938, the Journal published a total of 70 volumes over 47 years. From 1939 to 1962, two volumes were published each year, and, from 1963 to 1972, three volumes per year. In 1973, the Journal moved to a twice-monthly publishing schedule, issuing six volumes per year, and in 1981 to three issues per month and 12 volumes per year. In 1995 the Journal became a weekly publication, with 13 volumes per year of four issues each. However, with the increasing cost of printing and mailing, in 2006 we moved back to three larger issues per month, and 12 volumes per year. As a result of this increase in volume of publication, the last two Editors-in-Chief have overseen the publication of over 60% of all of the volumes of the Journal, and the current Editor-in-Chief almost one-third of them. The unusual title of The Journal of Comparative Neurology has inspired curiosity since its inception. In the early 1890's the nascent clinical field of neurology had not yet taken its current name, and the title of the Journal reflected the interest of the Herricks in the use of experimental methods for determining the biological basis of behavior. The comparative method was intended to use the developing brain and the brains from “simpler” organisms to analyze the relationship of structure and function in the nervous system. Thus, the title was meant to embrace what would now be called the “neurosciences,” as broadly as possible. In fact, the early volumes of the Journal encouraged submission of manuscripts in psychology as well, and from 1905 to 1910 the title was changed to The Journal of Comparative Neurology and Psychology. However, by 1911, this addition had been dropped, and from that time forward the Journal has focused predominantly on neuroanatomy. The emphasis of The Journal of Comparative Neurology on the relationships of structure and function in nervous systems, both during development and in later life, continues to the present day. However, the title of the Journal still engenders some confusion, particularly among the increasing number of neuroscientists who are not English speakers, and who occasionally submit papers that are outside of this relatively broad range. The Editors have therefore revised the Journal's mission statement to reflect better its purpose, and this is reproduced below. This statement will be featured prominently on our website and will be included in the inside back cover of the Journal. We hope it will help the many new readers, particularly those in countries where electronic access has recently opened up the availability of the Journal. For our loyal followers, please be assured that JCN's purpose is to continue to be the very best place to publish your research that involves issues of localization in the nervous system. “The Journal of Comparative Neurology, founded in 1891, is the oldest basic neuroscience journal in the English language. It is an interdisciplinary journal that focuses on the structure of the nervous system, and its relationship to function, development, plasticity, degeneration, and repair. This field is broadly defined and includes work that uses molecular, anatomical, physiological, pharmacological, and behavioral methods to investigate the organization of the nervous system, but does not include papers that primarily address clinical aspects of neurology, neuropathology, psychiatry, or psychology. Work on all species from invertebrates to humans is welcome, but the emphasis should be on the way that species adaptations enlighten us about the function or organization of nervous systems, rather than on their evolution per se. The Journal of Comparative Neurology takes special care to provide the highest quality of image reproduction, and offers sufficient page space to document and describe the work completely. Only full-length investigative reports are desired; we do not accept short communications, or papers that are focused on new methods.” Louise C.
