ResumoIt is shown that the effect of the binding of an alkali and alkaline-earth cation on the properties of a molecule may be evaluated by replacing the cation by an appropriate point charge. The procedure is utilized to evaluate the effect of a mono- or divalent ion placed in different positions on the molecular potential of the phosphodiester linkage. The resulting specific screening of the phosphate potential is discussed.
