Resumo

Max Nordau seems worth remembering on the hundredth anniversary of his book Degeneration, not only because of the book's fame and its popularization of a concept which has lasted so long, but also because of what he himself stood for the beliefs and hopes which characterized so many of his class, profession and generation. His view of the dangers which society faced, and his proposed cure, articulated a series of convictions and preconceptions which made their mark even as the liberalism for which they stood collapsed in the inferno of the first world war.
