Resumo

The social and environmental responsibility gained importance due to the numerous studies from various fields of knowledge. The scope of study covers the “social balance”. The aim is to analyze the applicability of the social balance in Higher Education Institution, developed from the original model established by the “Instituto Brasileiro de Análises Sociais e Econômicas” (IBASE). In methodological terms is a descriptive study with qualitative approach and document analysis. In the results of the analysis of the social balance, it became evident that the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) is expanding, but must take care of the needs accessory.
