ResumoTriethylamine-N-oxide (TENO) as the hemihydrate and tripropylamine-N-oxide (TPNO) monohydrate have been isolated and used in preparing complexes with cobalt(II). Two classes of compounds were isolated: molecular bis complexes of the type CoL2X2 (L = TENO, TPNO; X = Cl−, Br−, I−, SCN−) and ionic tetrakis complexes having the formula (CoL4)(ClO4)2 Both sets of complexes have essentially tetrahedral coordination geometry both in acetonitrile solution and in the solid state. Addition of excess TPNO to solutions of Co(TPNO)2X2 cuases formation of Co(TPNO)42+ but no further change. Addition of excess TENO to either Co(TENO)2X2 or Co(TENO)42+ solutions produces a new 5-coordinate species, Co(TENO)52+.
