Human infection, acquired from infected carnivores, is due to parasitism by the larval stages of tapeworms belonging to the genusEchinococcus(Rudolphi, 1810). These tapeworms are almost cosmopolitan in their distribution and, while it has been known for many years that this disease constitutes a serious public health problem in Eurasian countries, until the beginning of the last decade it was considered to be of rare occurrence in North America. Renewed emphasis has been given to the importance of echinococcosis in clinical medicine as a result of...1 Vogel H: Über den Entwicklungszyklus und die Artzugehorigkeit des europäischen Alveolarechinococcus, Deutsche med.
