Resumo

Body composition and nutrition of adolescent boys training for bicycle racing were studied with isotope dilution technique using 42K and tritium as tracers. Nutrition was investigated with a 24-hour recall and a diet history. The boys’ intake of energy and of essential nutrients was high. Their body height and weight were normal for age. Their mean body cell mass was 47%, total body water 69% and body fat 8% of body weight. Total body water, extracellular water, and body fat in relation to body cell mass gave mean ratios of 1.47, 0.69 and 0.19, respectively. These data were compared to those previously found for inactive children with inadequate nutrition suffering from cerebral palsy.
