ResumoThis article explores the mystery of Nikolai Bukharin's confession in the Moscow show trial of 1938. If read in the context of Bukharin's prison writings as well as the intimate notes of other Communists who were embattled in the Great Terror, the public confession resonates with intense personal meaning. At its core were pressing historical and philosophical questions that the Bolshevik Party theoretician struggled through during the months and years of his life.
