ResumoAbstract This article presents an analysis of word stress in the Cebu dialect of Cebuano, a major language of the Philippines. First, the distribution of primary and secondary stresses is examined. Arguments are presented in favor of the iamb as the basic foot template (McCarthy and Prince 1986; Hayes 1987). The metrical properties of clitics are then investigated, lending additional support to an iambic analysis. Finally, the interaction of stress assignment and suffixation is considered.
