ResumoSince the early description of "giant cell tumor variant" by Kolodny in 1927, "calcifying giant cell tumor" by Ewing in 1928, and "epiphyseal chondromatous giant cell tumor" by Codman in 1931, this tumor has been accepted and treated as a relatively rare benign neoplasm with a predilection for the epiphyscs of long bones.4, 10, 23 In 1942, Jaffe and Lichtenstein19 introduced the term "benign chondroblastoma" emphasizing this specific neoplasm to be a distinct clinicopathologic entity separate from giant cell tumor of bone. However, some of these neoplasms are still diagnosed and classified as giant cell tumors of bone, while others are misdiagnosed and regarded as chondrosarcomas or osteogenic sarcomas.38 Benign chondroblastomas of bone comprise approximately 1 per cent of benign primary bone tumors in several reported series.8, 17, 24, 28, 32, 42, 43 There are over 500 cases of chondroblastoma of bone reported in the world literature, many of which arc case reports or small series of cases.
