ResumoFellow members of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA), it is a great honor to be your 40th president. Before I discuss the 2 questions that have dominated my professional life, “What if?” and “Why not?” I want to recognize some special guests: Nobel laureate Stanley Pruisner is our Robert E. Gross Lecturer; Michael Longaker will regale us with The Jay and Margie Grosfeld Lecture; Marcelo Martinez-Ferro will present the International Guest Lecture. This year, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery Lecture will be a symposium introducing themarvelous newAPSA Information Technology infrastructure. I am very proud of our new APSA interactive Web page and APSA case log system. But my greatest joy is to share this moment with my amazing wife, Gretchen, and our wonderful kids, Todd, Tenley, Brittany, and Kelcey. Thanks, Todd, for that insightful introduction. This morning, I'd like to talk about one surgeon's lifelong struggle with 2 questions: “What if?” and “Why not?” I believe that these 2 questions define the professional lives of all pediatric surgeons.
