ResumoThe consequences of diethylstilbestrol (DES) treatment in pregnancy remain with us today; most important is the observation by Herbst and his colleagues that maternal DES therapy was associated with clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina (N Engl J Med 1971;284:878-81). The rationale for the use of DES was based on observations in animals and humans that stilbestrol might enhance the production of progesterone, thereby preventing early abortion and later pregnancy complications. As emphasized by Drs Olive and George Smith, prophylactic therapy was necessary.
