Resumo

An approach borrowed from the nonlinear dynamics methods is used to study the build-up of a radiation beam in a laser cavity with mirrors having a Gaussian reflectivity distribution. Iterated maps, corresponding to round-trip outputs from the cavity, are derived for quantities related to beam parameters, i.e. to spot size, radius of curvature, beam quality factor M2. It is shown that the maps have a fixed point, that is attained with characteristic behaviours. Moreover, the maps are suitably modified to have a limit cycle. A possible physical interpretation of the corresponding modifications is presented. In the latter case of a limit cycle, a particular sensitivity to parameter variations is found.
