ResumoIn this study the emergence of the critical status of crack growth in the chevron–notch fracture test on elastic–plastic materials is discussed. The theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the critical crack length for elastic–plastic materials is not a constant, and that it is not only a function of material properties, but also a function of the speed of crack growth. In particular, it is shown theoretically that for elastic–plastic materials the critical status of crack growth often occurs after the peak load.
