Resumo

The fantasy genre and its fandom have a reputation for whiteness. The twenty-first century has seen multiple challenges to that identity, but it is also one which is at times vigorously defended. This article examines debates about race on Westeros.org, a fan website devoted to the novels of George R.R. Martin and the related franchise, particularly HBO's Game of Thrones. Drawing on the work of Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, it explores the rhetorical strategies deployed by users of the website to construct fan identity within that community as normatively white.
