ResumoThe distribution and some aspects of biology of Plectorhynchus pictus (Thunberg) were investigated in the Red Sea near Jizan between 16°04′17°-10′N and 42°-10°-42°35′E. The fish is mostly distributed in a depth range of 5–29 m. Of 882 specimens studied, 423 were males and 459 females, giving a sex ratio of 1: 1.09. In September and December males were more abundant in the population. Of the fish sampled, 80.6% of males and 73.2% of females belonged to age groups 0+ and I+, ranging in length from 105 to 230 mm. The smallest mature male was 345 mm in length and the smallest mature female 315 mm. Mature fish appeared in the population in spring and early winter. Spawning takes place in March and April. Fecundity of 3–6 year old fishes ranged from 495 450 to 855 067 eggs with a mean value of 630 957 ± 1.06 eggs. Linear relationships were found between the fecundity and total length, total weight, greatest body width and gonad weight. The age was determined from scale readings. The body length-scale diameter relationship was linear (TL = 45 + 4.69 S). Annual rings are formed in March.
