Argilés Departament de Bioquímica i Fisiologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain Josep M. Argilés: obtained his Doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 1981. He then became Lecturer in Biochemistry and carried out postdoctoral work on acetone metabolism in mammals. In 1987 he undertook further postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. In 1988 he became interested in the role of cytokines in the modulation of the host response and went to the Metabolic Research Laboratory, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK, to work on the metabolic effects of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1. At present he is Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Barcelona, where he is the leader of a research group interested in tumor-host interrelationships.Unitat de Bioquímica i Biologia Molecular B, Departament de Bioquímica i Fisiologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Diagonal 645, 08071-Barcelona, SpainSearch for more papers by this authorCèlia Garcia-Martínez, Cèlia Garcia-Martínez Departament de Bioquímica i Fisiologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, SpainSearch for more papers by this authorMaria Llovera, Maria Llovera Departament de Bioquímica i Fisiologia, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain Cèlia Garcia-Martínez: and Marta Llovera are both predoctoral students working under the supervision of the above-mentioned scientists.Search for more papers by this authorFrancisco J. Later, he undertook postdoctoral research in the Metabolic Research Laboratory, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK, working on different aspects of cytokines during the perinatal period. In 1988 he was promoted to Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University of Barcelona, where he is at present investigating the role of cytokines in muscle wasting and its relation with cachexia.Search for more papers by this author Josep M.
