ResumoSUMMARY Artense is a plateau of eruptive and melamorphic rocks wedged in between three mountain groups of Massif Central : Monls-Dore in the North, Cézallier in the East and Cantal in the South. It is a region of lakes and peat-bogs, with unfruitful soil, which has been moulded by the quaternary glaciers. The people have long lived on poor polyculture and temporary migration. A few aspects of traditional life, itinerant trade for instance, are being maintained, but the country, as in the mountains, has specialized in dairy farming and cheese production (Saint- Nectaire). Rich in torrents, Arlense has just been equipped with a new hydro-electric power-station and with artificial lakes that could lead to some tourist development. The problem of the area is to provide facilities for reception and accommodation that may remain part and parcel of rural environment.
