ResumoProblematic eating behaviours are found in patients suffering from diabetes, with up to 20% of women with type 2 diabetes reporting excessive eating. However, no specific French instrument exists in order to assess problematic eating behaviours and attitudes related to diabetes management. We translated the original version of the Diabetes Eating Problem Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) using the back translation method. 624 participants with both types of diabetes (type 1 = 137; type 2 = 487) were recruited through email and advertisements in Plein Soleil, the journal of Diabète Québec and invited to participate in an online survey on two different occasions. Of the initial participants, 309 took the survey at Time 2, one month later (x¯=34 days). The 16 items of the French version demonstrated excellent internal consistency at both assessment times (Time 1, α= .80 and Time 2, α= .83). Test-retest reliability indicated high correlation between both times (r=.85, p<.01). It correlated positively with the EDE-Q6 global score (r=.70, p<.01), the restriction subscale (r=.41, p<.01), the eating concerns subscale (r=.66, p<.01), the shape concerns subscale (r=.66, p<.01), the weight concern subscale (r=.67, p<.01), and the body dissatisfaction subscale of the EDI (r=.58, p<.01). A score ≥ 33 (sensitivity=77.44%; specificity=74.34%) indicates risk of eating disorder. The French version of the DEPS-R represents a useful tool to screen for the presence of problematic eating behaviours and attitudes in individuals with diabetes. However, it can't be used alone to diagnose eating disorders. Additional evaluation as well as clinical judgment are required.
