Resumo

Solvent effects on the NH stretching frequency of a number of acetanilides have been examined. The frequency shifts cannot be used as a unique test for intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The ability of a solvent to break the intramolecular hydrogen bond is partly determined by the energy required to rotate the acetylamino group into a position which allows access of the solvent to the amino hydrogen atom.
