ResumoThe aging of the Brazilian population has been followed by changes in family structure, increasing demand for long-stay institutions as an alternative to social support to the elderly. It is a descriptive study, which aims to analyze the Quality of Life (QOL) in institutionalized elderly in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte State. For data collection, interviews were carried out with 43 elderly people using the WHOQOL-OLD, specifically to evaluate QOL among the elderly. The results indicated an overall average score of 52.9%. The sensory aspect achieved the highest average score (68.1%), showing satisfaction with the situation they are in. However, the autonomy aspect obtained the lowest average (40.7%), showing dissatisfaction about their ability to make decisions. It was concluded that the elderly rated their QOL as neither unsatisfactory nor satisfactory. It is necessary to implement public policies aimed at promoting the attention to the institutionalized elderly in anticipation of a better quality of life.
