Resumo

Although the effect of ultra high-frequency sound waves on chemical reactions was recorded more than 60 years ago it is only during the last two decades that sonochemistry has become an important field of research in its own right. This development is directly linked to the development of ultrasonic equipment for other purposes. This article illustrates the diversity of current interest and reviews some prospects for the future.
