ResumoThe library of the Spencer family at Althorp House was one of the richest and largest of the nineteenth century, thanks mainly to the ‘bibliomania’ of the second Earl Spencer. Financial problems forced the fifth Earl to sell the entire collection in the 1890s, though fortunately it was acquired whole by the John Rylands Library.
