ResumoAbstract The reflectivity and transmission of trigonal selenium single crystals are studied in the far infrared spectral region. The eigenfrequencies, oscillator strengths, and related quantities of the infrared‐active lattice vibrations are deduced from the reflectivity by means of a classical oscillator model and also from the absorption spectra. The phonon spectra of Se are calculated using a simple force constant model. The calculated phonon frequencies reproduce all the available experimental data within an accuracy of about 10%.
