Resumo

SINCE the discovery of coenzyme Q in beef-heart mitochondria1, its significant role in the electron transport system has been well established2. However, knowledge regarding the function of coenzyme Q in micro-organisms is somewhat incomplete although it has been found in various species3. Since Azotobacter vinelandii, strain O, contains vitamin K as well as coenzyme Q8 (ref. 3), it would be of considerable interest to know whether both factors are involved in the electron transport system.
