ResumoAbstract The infrared spectra of methyl acrylate as vapour, in solution and as liquid have been recorded and interpreted with the aid of vapour contours, normal coordinate calculations and group frequencies. The band contours found in the mid-IR spectrum of this compound suggest that the cis orientation of the two double bonds about the C-C single bond is favoured over the trans orientation in the vapour state. The normal coordinate treatment is made for the in-plane vibrations by using a 34-parameter force field and previous assignments of some IR bands are also revised.
