ResumoAs more varieties of continuous filament carbon fibre enter the market (some with ultimate strains of about 2%), the methods of evaluating strength and modulus and the way these are usually presented are examined. Sources of error and details of the non-Hookean behaviour are discussed, and a summary of the properties of high-performance fibre produced world-wide and tested at Harwell is presented. The importance of "processability" and the current limitations of carbon fibre are discussed briefly.
