Resumo

1. Extracts of Escherichia coli (E-26) can reduce the nitro groups of various organic nitro compounds to the corresponding arylamines in the presence of cysteine. 2. Aureomycin in low concentrations inhibits these reductions. Terramycin, in this system, is considerably less active than aureomycin. 3. The enzyme complex reducing organic nitro groups is probably not the same as those reducing inorganic nitrate and nitrite. 4. In the dialyzed system no significant arylamine formation occurs unless DPN, l-malate or fumarate and l-cysteine are present. The need for l-cysteine seems specific. 5. The locus at which aureomycin inhibits the formation of arylamine apparently is either prior to the formation of reduced DPN or in the reduction of the nitro compound to the nitroso compound.
