ResumoOne of the founding fathers of organic chemistry, the German chemist Friedrich August Kekulé died 100 years ago in Bonn on 13 July 1896. Kekulé's theoretical insights into the classification of organic compounds, valency and structural chemistry and his suggestion of the hexagonal formula for benzene transformed the subject. This centennial essay examines the institutional and intellectual contexts of his theoretical achievements.
