Resumo

As the Human Ecology focuses the man and his relationship with animals, plants and physical environment the present study aimed at collecting information concerning space, housing quality, as well as age, profession and family income of shum dwellers in the area of Londrina, PR. Collections were carried out during 7 months, and 6 slums were visited. It was found that 772 people inhabited houses with an average size of 27.6 square meters, with 2,6 rooms and a population of 5,1 persons. 68,3% of the people were individuals below 25 years old wheareas, 63% worked as "bóia-fria" (farm workers at harvest time). From 150 families, 60% received lower than three minimum wages. It was concluded that the correct attitude should be to give slum dwellers better conditions of life, housing and work within their own slums other than try to remove them from the site.
