Abstract This study deals with the cordel literature written by Manoel Monteiro, which has been published repeatedly since 1952 and with increasing regularity during the past six years. Manoel Monteiro seeks to contribute to the aesthetic and sociocultural education of sections of the Brazilian population that are less fortunate, both financially and culturally. Therefore, his poetry, consistently conscious of its status as an art and as a technique, is in large part a poetry of protest, of ideals, and of faith in human potential.
