ResumoThis article compares the pronounced differences between the early nineteenth‐century dramatic adaptations about two historical individuals – Ourika and the Chevalier de Saint‐Georges – in France. The 1824 series of plays about Ourika refuse intermarriage as a dénouement, in consonance with the original novella. Likewise, the 1839 novel about the Chevalier maintains the impossibility of intermarriage, describing instead only illicit sexual relationships between people of different races. On the other hand, the 1840 play about the Chevalier concludes with a proposal of marriage by a white woman to a black man, conflating gender with racial equality.
