Resumo

This paper reviews the purported benefits of saccharin use. It examines saccharin's efficacy in the treatment and/or prevention of diabetes, excessive body weight, dental caries, hyperlipidemia, and hypoglycemia and its role in drug formulation. It concludes that there is no objective documentation of saccharin's benefits. The present plans of the Food and Drug Administration to limit its use to an over-the-counter drug should not adversely affect any possible benefits that its use might bestow on certain well-defined groups of individuals.
