Resumo

Abstract New Zealand specimens of fossil shark teeth referable to Carcharodon megalodon (Agassiz) are discussed, including the first examples from the North Island. Previously published records are reviewed and revised, and the stratigraphic distribution of this species discussed. The New Zealand records of C. megalodon, which begin in the Lower Oligocene, provide some of the earliest world records for this species. Stratigraphic distribution of the two related species, C. auriculatus Blainville, and C. carcharias (Linnaeus) is also examined.
