ResumoOxygen can be either beneficial or detrimental for diazotrophy in organisms capable of an aerobic catabolism. It supports the production of a substrate for nitrogenase (ATP), but it can also inhibit the activity and repress the synthesis of this enzyme. Here, aspects of the relevant physiology are reviewed with particular emphasis on those relating to the mechanism of O2 regulation of nitrogenase synthesis.
