Resumo

In his role as a modem‐day giullare, Dario Fo has made a point of questioning and subverting the authority of the Catholic Church. His criticism has focused on the concept of cosmic terror and the image of the severe paternal god as means of asserting and enforcing the dominion of official cultures. In performances such as Mistero buffo, The Pope and the Witch, and, more recently, Johan Padan, he continues the satumalian traditions of parodic, iconoclastic spectacle in his attempts to unmask the hypocrisy of religious oppression and affirm the values of folk religion as a celebration of life and creation.
