BEFORE 1935 myasthenia gravis was an unfamiliar neurologic oddity, unresponsive to therapy and carrying a high mortality. In that year the injection of neostigmine was shown by Viets and Schwab1 to provide a rapid and specific diagnostic test. As a result hundreds of new cases were identified.
