ResumoA problem often encountered when depositing Langmuir-Blodgett films is the preparation of multilayers from materials which do not possess the classical amphiphilic properties exhibited by compounds such as octadecanoic acid. Often only a single monolayer may be deposited onto a substrate; attempts to deposit the second monolayer may result in either no deposition or indeed the transfer (peeling off) of the first monolayer itself from the substrate back to the air-water interface. This communication describes a method which circumvents this problem and thus enables multilayer films to be prepared from materials which have previously proved only to yield monolayer coatings.
