ResumoOptimum energy resolution has been pursued in the study of alpha-particle decay spectroscopy of selected 1p-shell nuclei. Counter telescopes with two-dimensional position sensitivity are used to identify three-body final state reactions which proceed by sequential binary decay. Heavy-ion beams of 3 to 8 MeV/u from the Florida State University Tandem/LINAC Accelerator Laboratory are used to initiate the reactions. Decay energy resolution of 5 keV has been observed for the reaction 12C(12C, 8Be → 2α)16Og.s. at a bombarding energy of 30.6 MeV.
