ResumoAbstract. One direct measurement and two indirect estimates suggest that 35–40 kg nitrogen per hectare are deposited on arable land from the atmosphere each year in the south and east of England. This could contribute markedly to nitrate leaching and soil acidification. It may also change the flora and fauna of ‘natural’ ecosystems, as such amounts are likely to exceed the critical load.
