ResumoThe Flemish deep-sea port of Zeebrugge is very successful as a ro-ro terminal. Its development as a container transit port however is hampered to some extent by the lack of an adequate connection of the Bruges – Zeebrugge area with the Belgian inland waterways network. The port of Antwerp for instance is at the hub of three main inland waterways, and there 27% of hinterland traffic is carried by inland navigation, whereas this figure is only 2 to 3% for Zeebrugge.
